What is the CNG...

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a readily available alternative to gasoline that’s made by compressing natural gas to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. Consisting mostly of methane, CNG is odorless, colorless and tasteless. It’s drawn from domestically drilled gas wells or in conjunction with crude oil production.

History of Utilizing CNG as a vehicular fuel:

The history of natural gas (CNG) as a vehicular fuel dates back to World War II. Natural Gas vehicles are a proven technology that have been enhanced and refined over the years into a convenient and extremely safe method of transportation.

History of NGV industry in Egypt:

In Egypt, the NGV industry started in 1985 as a pilot project in one of Petroleum Sector’s affiliated companies. After absolutely proving the project’s success, the Ministry of Petroleum has founded two affiliated companies (Car Gas & Gas Tec.) for establishing CNG fueling stations and converting vehicles to run by natural gas.

In order to afford a special service to the CNG customers, it has opened the way to the private sector companies to take part in the NGV activity and then Shell/Gas Express, Master Gas, Arabia Gas and TOTAL Egypt companies have joined the working companies that totaled 6 companies.

On the purpose of expanding the utilization of natural gas as a fuel for vehicles, the Petroleum Sector affiliated companies have contracted with the vehicles manufacturing companies to convert the vehicles to run by natural gas on the production line so as to increase the number of vehicles running by natural gas.

As a result, the number of natural gas powered vehicles increased to 228909 vehicles, the CNG stations reached 183 stations and the conversion centers reached 72 centers. Accordingly, Egypt is ranked within the pioneering countries worldwide in NGV field in terms of gas sales as the total amount of gas sales in Egypt amounted to 6.171 billion m3 by end of March 2017.
